Online Workshop: On the Situation of Refugees on Samos & at other borders

22. Juni 2023 | 16:00–19:00

Dear all,

we, the Refugee Law Clinic e.V. Jena, would like to invite you all to our online workshop, where we will be joined by Phil, who is currently working in legal counseling for refugees on Samos. The workshop is in German. Translation might be possible on request if you register in advance at info@rlcjena.de. Here are some more information:

What?
The ‘Closed Controlled Access Centre’ (CCAC) on the Greek island of Samos became operational as an initial reception facility under the so-called ‘hotspot concept’ in late 2021. Currently, nearly 1,000 asylum seekers live in the facility. Human rights organizations criticize the lack of medical and psychological care, police violence and the restriction of the right to asylum. Together with Phil Mertsching, the topic of detention and imprisonment of refugees will be discussed at the CCAC.
What framework does EU legislation set for the detention of refugees?
What is the practice in the CCAC on Samos?
What is the role of (European) civil society in addressing human rights violations at the EU external borders?

Who?
Phil Mertsching has worked as a legal advisor as well as in public relations for I Have Rights (IHR) on Samos. Currently, he serves as an officer and in the administration of IHR.

I Have Rights (IHR) is a Greek-German human rights organization that provides free legal counseling for refugees on the Greek ‘hotspot’ island of Samos. In addition, IHR conducts outreach on human rights violations at the EU’s external borders and strategic litigation. https://ihaverights.eu/
